Roblox Avatar Backgrounds: What Creators Actually Earn

Tristan·18 days ago

Roblox avatar backgrounds went live on July 22, 2026, and creator uploads are opening now through a limited pilot. Before you make a single one, know what a sale pays. At the 200 Robux floor price you keep 60 Robux. The upload fee is 80. Your first sale loses money.

Here is the full math, the pilot requirements, and what the early demand data actually shows.

What you take home per sale

Roblox uses progressive revenue share on the Marketplace: the further above an item's price floor you price it, the larger your cut. Avatar backgrounds appear to sit on a 200 Robux floor — every official one is priced at exactly 200, and 200 is the reported minimum for the pilot.

One caveat before the numbers. Roblox publishes this revenue share table for Marketplace items generally and has not confirmed in writing that avatar backgrounds use it. The percentages below are the documented Marketplace rates applied to a 200 Robux floor. If Roblox announces a different split for this category, this table changes, and we will change it here.

Your price vs. floor Your share You keep Sales to cover the 80 R$ upload fee
200 R$ 1.0x 30% 60 R$ 2
260 R$ 1.3x 37% 96 R$ 1
300 R$ 1.5x 41% 123 R$ 1
400 R$ 2.0x 50% 200 R$ 1
600 R$ 3.0x 62% 372 R$ 1
800 R$ 4.0x 67% 536 R$ 1
1,200 R$ 6.0x 70% 840 R$ 1

Read that table twice. Pricing at the floor is the worst choice on the board. Go from 200 to 400 Robux and your take per sale jumps from 60 to 200 — 3.3x the money for 2x the price. You would need one third of the unit sales to earn the same amount.

The upload fee is 80 Robux per submission. Roblox has not published a publishing advance for avatar backgrounds. The nearest comparison is classic clothing — also a 2D asset — which carries a 10 Robux advance that is rebated back through sales. 3D categories charge far more: 1,000 Robux for hair, 1,500 for hats. Where backgrounds land between those two poles decides whether the table above holds. Our guide to uploading UGC to Roblox covers how these fees stack up.

Can you even apply right now?

Uploads are not open to everyone. Roblox is running a capacity-capped pilot, and it closes fast.

  • Deadline: August 13, 2026 — first come, first served, closes at capacity
  • ID verification and an active Roblox Plus subscription
  • Clean moderation history, no actions in the past 12 months
  • Clean DMCA history
  • At least one Marketplace item published in the last 30 days
  • A signed NDA

Accepted creators can upload immediately but cannot publish for sale yet, and Roblox says the full public release is still months away. If you are a 2D artist with no Marketplace history, this round is not for you — the 30-day publishing requirement rules you out.

Do avatar backgrounds actually sell?

Nobody outside Roblox knows, and be suspicious of anyone who tells you otherwise. The Sales field on Roblox's own catalog items returns 0 no matter what. I checked it against the Roblox Baseball Cap, an item millions of people own, and it also reports 0. Any sales figure quoted for an official item is a broken field, not data.

Favorites are public, though. Two and a half weeks after launch, the five paid avatar backgrounds looked like this.

The five official Roblox avatar backgrounds and their favorite counts

Background Favorites
Moonlight Meadow 11,515
Midnight Carnival 5,833
Courtside Golden Hour 3,259
Concrete Playground 2,569
Red Planet 1,259

24,435 favorites in under three weeks. Favorites are not sales — plenty of people favorite what they cannot afford. But the shape matters more than the total: the top background has 9x the favorites of the bottom one. That is a winner-take-most curve. A twelve-piece collection probably will not beat one background people genuinely want.

Roblox avatar background size and specs

There is still no Creator Hub documentation page for this category. Here is what exists today.

Spec Value How solid
Resolution 2560x1440, exact Community datamine — unconfirmed
Alpha channel Not allowed Community datamine — unconfirmed
Max file size 20 MB Community datamine — unconfirmed
Asset type ID 92 Verified against the Roblox API
Minimum price 200 Robux Official

Treat the first three as rumour until Roblox publishes the real spec. We will update this page the day they do.

The composition trap nobody warns you about

Your Roblox avatar renders on top of the background, centred and low on the frame. Whatever you put in the middle gets covered by a character.

Safe zones for Roblox avatar backgrounds, showing the centre area covered by the avatar

Every instinct from wallpaper design says put the subject dead centre. That is exactly wrong here. Push your detail to the edges and corners, keep the centre low-contrast, and check the result against an avatar silhouette before you export. This one habit separates backgrounds that look designed from backgrounds that look cropped.

What to do this week

If you already sell on the Marketplace and hold Roblox Plus, apply before August 13 — the cost of applying is an afternoon. If you do not qualify, you have months before the public release, which is more time to practise edge-weighted composition than most people will use.

And whatever you price at, do not price at 200.

Already making 3D items? Our free Roblox UGC checker validates accessories and layered clothing against the official limits before you spend the upload fee.

FAQ

How much do you earn from a Roblox avatar background?

It depends entirely on price. At the 200 Robux floor you keep 30%, or 60 Robux per sale. At 400 Robux you keep 50%, or 200 Robux per sale. Roblox's progressive revenue share pays more the further you price above the floor.

What is the upload fee for Roblox avatar backgrounds?

80 Robux per submission, the standard Marketplace upload fee. Roblox has not announced a publishing advance for backgrounds. Classic clothing, the nearest 2D comparison, charges 10 Robux and rebates it through sales; 3D categories charge 1,000 to 1,500 Robux.

Can anyone upload Roblox avatar backgrounds?

Not yet. Uploads are limited to a pilot programme with applications closing August 13, 2026. You need ID verification, an active Roblox Plus subscription, a clean moderation and DMCA history, at least one Marketplace item published in the last 30 days, and a signed NDA. A full public release is expected in a few months.

What size are Roblox avatar backgrounds?

Community datamine reports exactly 2560x1440 with no alpha channel and a 20 MB file size cap. Roblox has not published official documentation, so treat these numbers as unconfirmed.

Why do my Roblox avatar backgrounds look wrong on a profile?

The avatar renders on top of the image, centred and low. Anything you place in the middle of the frame will be hidden. Move your focal points to the edges and keep the centre area low-contrast.
